Podcast Episode 21: Dr. Alex Kaiser on Treating the Person, Not Just the Tooth

For Dr. Alex Kaiser, dentistry combines artistry, honesty, and genuine human connection. In this episode of the Comfort Dental Podcast, he shares his path into the profession, the lessons he has learned as a young dentist, and why patients should never feel ashamed to ask for help.

Discovering the Art in Dentistry

Dr. Kaiser’s interest in dentistry began with positive experiences at his family dentist and five years of orthodontic treatment. After high school and two years of missionary service, he decided to pursue dentistry.

His journey included completing a master’s program before earning a place at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s dental school in Florida. He remains grateful for the opportunity.

“They’re the only ones that gave me a shot,” he says. “I took that, and now I’m a dentist because of it.”

Art also played a role in his career choice. Dr. Kaiser grew up drawing and painting, inspired in part by his grandfather, an accomplished watercolor artist. He saw dentistry as an opportunity to use that creativity to restore teeth, transform smiles, and help people feel better about themselves.

Growing Through Honesty

Beginning a dental career brought moments of uncertainty, but Dr. Kaiser approached them with humility. He believes dentists must continue practicing, learning, and being honest when something does not go as expected.

That mindset helps him focus on growth instead of perfection. It also allows him to build trust with patients by communicating clearly about their treatment, what will happen during an appointment, and what comes next.

Some of his most rewarding experiences involve dentures. He enjoys guiding patients from their first consultation through the moment they see their new smile—an experience that can bring patients to tears and change how they feel about themselves.

Serving Montrose Through Comfort Dental

Dr. Kaiser joined Comfort Dental immediately after dental school. The opportunity to own a practice, make clinical decisions, and serve patients at an affordable cost made the organization feel like the right fit.

At his Montrose, Colorado, practice, Dr. Kaiser and his partners care for Medicaid patients, uninsured patients, and families with a wide range of needs. Comfort Dental programs such as the Gold Plan help make treatment more accessible for people without insurance.

Dr. Kaiser appreciates being able to build a career that supports his family while helping people in his community receive necessary dental care.

Caring for the Whole Person

One lesson from dental school continues to guide Dr. Kaiser: A dentist should be more than a technician.

“There’s a person attached to this tooth,” he explains.

Every patient brings personal experiences, worries, and responsibilities into the dental office. Some are frightened. Others feel embarrassed because they have not visited a dentist in years or have struggled to care for their teeth.

Dr. Kaiser wants those patients to know they will not be judged.

Life gets busy, and circumstances such as work, pregnancy, raising children, health challenges, and financial pressure can make oral health difficult to prioritize. Although Dr. Kaiser will be honest when changes are needed, his goal is never to shame a patient.

Instead, he focuses on what can be done moving forward.

“You can trust that we’re going to be on your side,” he says.
