meet Dr. Rick A. Kushner: the visionary behind Comfort Dental

Comfort Dental was founded by Dr. Rick A. Kushner, a visionary dentist who believed that practice ownership should be simple, profitable, and accessible to all dentists. After graduating from Marquette University in 1977, Dr. Kushner set out to create a patient-focused, high-efficiency practice model that eliminated the burdens of corporate dentistry and high startup costs.

His approach led to the development of Comfort Dental, a franchise system designed to help dentists take control of their careers with full equity ownership, lower overhead, and unmatched earning potential. Today, Comfort Dental has grown into a nationwide network of thriving, 100% dentist-owned practices — all built on the core principles Dr. Kushner established.

Dr. Kushner’s keys of practice success

“lean & mean”

Dr. Kushner pioneered the “Lean & Mean” practice management strategy — a model that maximizes efficiency while keeping overhead costs low. The core principle is simple: run a streamlined, high-volume practice without sacrificing quality care. By keeping costs lean and eliminating wasteful spending, Comfort Dental franchise owners enjoy higher profitability, greater financial independence, and the ability to provide affordable dental care to more patients. This model has allowed Comfort Dental to grow without relying on private equity or corporate influence, ensuring that dentists — not investors — reap the rewards of their hard work.

“the fantastic five”

Dr. Kushner often talks about the “Fantastic Five” — five key strategies that drive the success of every Comfort Dental practice:

  1. Initial Interview & Handwritten Welcome NoteDentists establish trust by having a relaxed, non-clinical conversation with new patients, followed by a personal welcome note to build rapport.

  2. Complete Case Diagnosis & Clinical Exam Talk-OverComfort Dental dentists ensure transparency by walking patients through their diagnoses in an easy-to-understand manner.

  3. Financial Arrangements Presented by the DoctorInstead of staff handling financial discussions, doctors personally explain treatment costs, fostering trust and clarity.

  4. Post-Op Care CallsFollowing treatment, dentists personally check in on patients to reinforce a patient-centered approach.

  5. Patient Exit InterviewBefore patients leave, dentists ensure satisfaction by addressing concerns and improving future care.
By following the Fantastic Five, Comfort Dental dentists create strong patient relationships, ensuring long-term loyalty and satisfaction.

“the sensational seven”

Dr. Kushner also defined the “Sensational Seven” — a set of essential traits that make a Comfort Dental dentist truly successful:

  1. LikeabilityPatients trust and return to dentists they feel comfortable with.

  2. Organizational SkillsA well-structured practice keeps efficiency high and stress low.

  3. Clinical Efficiency & SpeedProviding quality care quickly helps maximize profitability and patient volume.

  4. Work EthicHard work and dedication drive long-term success in ownership.

  5. Confrontational ToleranceAddressing challenges directly — whether with staff, patients, or business operations — is essential.

  6. LeadershipComfort Dental franchise owners lead their teams and create positive work environments.

  7. Clinical SkillsStrong technical abilities ensure patients receive top-quality care and keep coming back.

These seven qualities define the culture at Comfort Dental and ensure that franchise owners are not only financially successful, but also trusted, effective leaders in their communities.
